Get Hands-On with Electronics at Makers Mill This November!

Explore Arduino, learn to use an oscilloscope, and discover new possibilities with instructor John Gotthardt.

Ever wondered how electronic circuits work, how to troubleshoot them, or how to bring your own electronics projects to life?

This November, Makers Mill is offering two hands-on electronics workshops with instructor John Gotthardt, giving curious makers, hobbyists, students, and aspiring technicians the opportunity to explore the world of electronics in a welcoming, small-group setting.

Whether you’re interested in electronics as a hobby, exploring a possible career path, or expanding skills you’ve already developed, these workshops offer a chance to learn by doing.

Discover Electronics 4: Introduction to Arduino

Thursdays, November 5, 12 & 19 | 6–8 p.m.

Have an idea for an electronics or robotics project but aren’t sure where to start?

Arduino is a popular microcontroller platform used by makers, artists, students, and hobbyists to experiment with electronics and bring creative ideas to life. From simple circuits to more complex projects, Arduino makes electronics prototyping accessible without requiring formal engineering training.

In this three-part workshop, participants will build on their basic electronics knowledge while exploring Arduino and its possibilities for hands-on projects.

This class is open to adults and youth ages 12–17 with introductory electronics knowledge. Previous Discover Electronics classes are not required.

Registration: $80 for non-members; $70 for members and youth. A $20 component kit fee applies unless you already have a kit from a previous Discover Electronics class.

How to Use an Oscilloscope

Saturday, November 7 | 9–11 a.m.

What if you could actually see what’s happening inside an electronic circuit?

That’s exactly what an oscilloscope allows you to do! This important electronics tool displays how electrical signals change over time, helping technicians and makers understand how circuits work and troubleshoot problems.

In this hands-on workshop, John will introduce the basics of oscilloscope operation and guide participants through using one to investigate the inner workings of an electronic circuit.

Participants should have a basic understanding of electricity and experience using a multimeter before attending.

Registration: $25 for non-members; $22 for members. No additional materials fee.

Meet Your Instructor: John Gotthardt

John brings 40 years of professional experience in the design, manufacturing, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of electronic equipment. An enthusiastic tinkerer, John enjoys sharing his knowledge and helping others explore the world of electronics.

Through his hands-on workshops at Makers Mill, he helps students build practical skills, gain confidence, and discover new possibilities for personal projects, hobbies, and potential careers.

Explore, Experiment, and Learn Something New!

One of the things that makes Makers Mill special is the opportunity to learn directly from people who have spent years developing their skills and are eager to share what they know.

Both electronics workshops are limited to just four participants, providing plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning, questions, and individual guidance.

Whether you’re hoping to tackle a project at home, develop skills for a future career, or simply better understand the technology around you, there’s always something new to discover in the Electronics Shop at Makers Mill!

Ready to get started? Explore both workshops and register at makersmill.org/electronics-classes.
