New Year’s Update on Makers Mill Building

After almost three years of planning and fundraising, construction documents for Carroll County’s first dedicated Community Makerspace and Vocation Hub, Makers Mill, are complete and ready for bidding.  This is the latest in a string of exciting milestones for Makers Mill.

Like so many organizations in 2020, Makers Mill found creative ways to navigate the unforeseen circumstances presented by a pandemic, and was able to zig and zag around timelines and strategies that were so neatly laid out on paper in its pre-Covid strategic plan. With diligent work and hundreds of hours of input from volunteers on the makerspace Building Design Committee, Board of Directors, and operational committees, the goals and most of the fundraising were amazingly achieved.

By the end of 2020, 94% of the Phase 1 renovation budget had been successfully raised thanks to over 820 individual donors, 4 state and federal grants, and 16  businesses who purchased our tax credits. Buoyed by this huge recognition of support, Makers Mill building plans will continue on track in tandem with efforts to raise the final 6% or $78,000 by the end of summer.  Makers Mill board and staff are confident they can raise this balance by the end of summer in order to cover everything required for a certificate of occupancy, including a full sprinkler system, elevator, all new HVAC systems, and all ADA, fire safety, life safety, and building code compliance.

The construction bid documents are due to be released statewide early February. Work on Phase I of the Makers Mill building renovation is anticipated to start in March and wrap up early fall when the doors will open for initial programming. Programming will focus on a variety of subjects including woodwork, metalwork & machinery, technology & multimedia, fabric and fine arts, jewelry, and workplace training and upskilling. If you have the experience and skills to instruct a course in one or more of these subjects, we’d love to hear from you.

In the coming weeks, details on programs and membership will be announced and posted on our Facebook and Instagram pages as well as on this blog – so keep your eyes peeled!
