Dye Curious? Join Us for a Splash of Fabric Fun at Makers Mill!

Three unique dyeing workshops with Jeanne Flanagan, August 20–22

If you’ve ever wanted to experiment with fabric dyeing—or just need an excuse to get a little messy in the name of creativity—this is your week. Our very own fiber arts extraordinaire Jeanne Flanagan is leading not one, not two, but three hands-on dyeing workshops right here at Makers Mill. You can take just one, or roll up your sleeves and join us for all three!

These sessions are outdoors on our covered back patio (hello fresh air and color explosions), and they’re all about learning by doing, playing with process, and making something truly your own.

Here’s the lineup:

Wednesday, August 20: Colors, Shades & Hues (1–4 PM)

Start simple—just a few primary dyes—and end up with a whole rainbow of custom colors. You’ll experiment on quilting cotton, tees, and repurposed linens to build a palette that’s totally you. Whether you’re planning your next quilt or just want to revive some old fabric, this class is a colorful kickstart.

Thursday, August 21: Shibori (1-4 PM)

Fold, scrunch, squish—then let the dye work its magic. Shibori is a traditional Japanese resist-dye technique that creates stunning patterns with nothing more than fabric folds and a bit of patience. You’ll get to try your hand at different techniques and see how color flows in fascinating, unpredictable ways.

Friday, August 22: Ice Dyeing (1–4 PM)

Yes, it involves actual ice. And yes, it’s as cool as it sounds. You’ll fold your fabric, pile on some powdered dye and ice, and watch as the melt creates wild, one-of-a-kind bursts of color. It’s messy, magical, and seriously addictive.

Each workshop stands alone, so feel free to jump into the one that sparks your interest—or come for the full three-day adventure. No experience needed. Youth ages 10+ are welcome with a signed waiver. Materials fees vary by class and are payable at the session (cash is great).

If you’re craving some creative time, love fiber arts, or just want to try something new with a group of awesome humans, we’d love to see you there. Let’s make some color happen.
