You’ve just finished that special sewing project — now it’s time for the perfect hem! The right finishing hem depends on both the style of your project and the weight of the fabric. Maybe you’ve bought the perfect pair of jeans, a prom dress, or curtains that just need shortening. In this class, you’ll learn how to choose the best hem and how to stitch each one by hand or by machine.
During class, you’ll learn and practice five essential hemming techniques:
Topstitched hem for a clean, tailored finish
Jeans hem that preserves the look of the original hem
Blind hem that is nearly invisible from the outside
Ladder stitch for a hand-stitched blind hem
Rolled hem for a narrow finished edge, done by hand or with a serger
Bring your own project and discover which hem works best. After practicing each technique, you’ll have time to begin hemming your project and gain the confidence to finish it independently outside of class.
Prerequisite: Sewing 101 or basic knowledge of sewing machine use. No serger experience required.
