What You’ll Learn — Session Breakdown
Session 1: An Introduction to Double Crochet
The double crochet stitch is the most popular and versatile stitch in crochet. Once you master it, you’ll be able to tackle nearly any project. You’ll start with a prepared base row, learning to place stitches correctly, turn your work, and keep count.
Session 2: Starting from Scratch
Now you’ll learn to create your own base chain and add to your skillset by practicing single and half-double crochet stitches. You’ll also begin reading simple crochet patterns, so you can follow instructions with confidence.
Session 3: Working in Spaces
This session introduces working with chains, single, and double crochet stitches to create more intricate shapes like shells and the classic granny square. You’ll receive patterns for four simple projects and pick one to focus on for your first finished piece — choose from an ear-warmer, bag, pillow, or patterned scarf!
Session 4: Creating Your First Masterpiece!
Time to put it all together! You’ll work on your chosen project with guidance from your instructor, building confidence to continue crocheting on your own well beyond the class.
Meet Your Instructor
Laurie Griggs, a retired middle school teacher, leads these workshops with warmth and patience. Throughout her career, Laurie taught not only academic subjects but also crafts, outdoor education, and sports. Her journey into crocheting began unexpectedly during a thunderstorm when she took shelter on a neighbor’s porch. Inspired by the cozy granny square blanket she saw, Laurie picked up a hook and hasn’t looked back since. Now, she loves sharing her passion for crochet with others, helping beginners get hooked on this wonderful craft.
