Makers Mill’s Community Visioning Night on Monday, June 16th at Wolfeboro Town Hall drew a strong and passionate turnout of community members, volunteers, and partners. The evening was marked by rich dialogue, dynamic breakout groups, and a shared sense of purpose as attendees helped shape the future of Makers Mill.
Participants were the first to see results from the recent community survey and then broke out into small groups to dive deep into five strategic priority areas that will frame the organization’s next five years. The conversations were spirited, thoughtful, and driven by a collective desire to see Makers Mill grow as a resilient and responsive community resource.
The priority areas are as follows:
1. Build Community, Belonging, and Resilience: Recent survey results indicate that what draws people to Makers Mill—and keeps them coming back—is a strong sense of community and belonging. Participants emphasized that continuing to invest in this “heart” of Makers Mill is a must. Groups brainstormed what types of activities help foster community, such as the monthly fiber mingle, game nights, town cleanup day, etc. They also explored how to be intentional about what policies and practices help people feel welcomed and connected at the Mill.
2: Long-Term Organizational Sustainability: Sustainability is about more than finances—it’s about long-term health across all dimensions of the organization. Participants discussed the importance of balancing risk management, innovation, financial prudence, and a culture of integrity and care.
Key recommendations included developing an organizational risk management plan and exploring planned giving strategies. Ensuring Makers Mill remains relevant and innovative—without drifting from its mission—was seen as essential to the organization’s ongoing vitality.
3: Nurture an Engaged, Empowered, and Aligned Volunteer Team: Using the “Three R’s” of Recruit, Retain, Reward, this group focused on creating a clear structure for volunteer engagement. Suggestions included organizing volunteers around distinct roles, and creating ways for volunteers to stay connected and make it easier for new members to enter the volunteer pipeline.
4. Workforce & Economic Development: This discussion centered on Makers Mill’s unique ability to support the regional economy through three primary avenues a) supporting entrepreneurs and business startups, b) facilitating skill-building in partnership with local employers, c) and continuing to partner with local workforce partners like Carroll Academy, Wentworth Economic Development Council, Small Business Development Corporation, Career Clarity New England, and Lakes Region Technology Center. It was acknowledged that Makers Mill is well-positioned to serve as a launchpad for tradespeople, makers, and creative entrepreneurs, and this strategy aims to harness that potential.
5. Partnerships & Problem-Solving: This priority area emphasizes the importance of community partnerships with nonprofits, schools, and institutions. Some examples where this is already happening include makers having fabricated wooden SNAP-benefit tokens for the Wolfeboro Area Farmers Market, sewing toiletry bags for NH teenagers entering the foster care system, and building footstools for local businesses to make their establishments more family-friendly. Whether it’s fabricating adaptive devices or co-developing curriculum, Makers Mill’s problem-solving mindset was seen as a major community asset.
In a colorful corner of the Town Hall, a group of enthusiastic young participants gathered for a breakout session of their own. With crayons, markers, and limitless imagination, they were asked to dream up the coolest makerspace they could possibly imagine—and their ideas did not disappoint.
The insights gathered during the Visioning Night will directly inform the development of Makers Mill’s 5-Year Strategic Plan. In the coming months, leadership will synthesize the feedback, prioritize actions, and share opportunities for further community involvement.
